Family fest ready for Family Day

Posted Feb 16, 2012 By Michelle Nash

A joint community organization promises to be the best place to celebrate winter-fun activities this Family Day.

Lowertown Community Association (LCA), along with the Lowertown Community Resource Centre, will host a joint party for the day. The event takes place at Jules Morin Park on Feb. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. LCA board member Michael Kirkpatrick said every year both organizations run winter festivals, but this year they decided to organize one big one.

"It's going to be awesome," Kirkpatrick said. "The summer festival was a smashing success and I do think it will be repeated, we are working hard to make it special."

There will be hot dogs, sleigh rides, tug of war, snowshoe races and a parade. The parade was always something the resource centre did in the past and something Kirkpatrick admits he is excited about.

"We thought it would be a great way to let people know about the activities, by marching around, picking people up along the way," he added.

The two organizations are also working together with residents on revitalizing the Winterfest location, Jules Morin Park, for 2012. Formally known as Anglesea Square in the 1950s, the park faces a complete renewal.

"We have been working at having a better communication because it's better on all sorts of community levels, because these events and issues affect all of Lowertown," Kirkpatrick added.
