Snow, food, fun promised at Vanier carnival
Posted Feb 9, 2012 By Michelle NashEMC news - A year in the making, Together for Vanier's working group on beautification along with community partners, the community's first-ever Vanier Winter Carnival has nearly arrived.
The idea came about last year, with the working group looking to host its own winter party last February, but with only a few weeks to organize the event, they voted to wait until this winter to better prepare.
The group has now organized a way for children to participate in Winterlude festivities in their own community.
The carnival is being held with the support of the Richelieu-Vanier Communtiy Centre, Muséoparc, the Cabane-a-Sucre, the Vanier Community Service Centre, the Wabano Aboriginal Health Centre and the Vanier Community Association.
Elaine Léger, from the Vanier Community Association parks and recreation committee and Elvira Diaz-Granados are the carnival organizers.
"We met as a group and we have all divided up the tasks and activities for the day," Léger said.
The carnival will include ice sculptures, lots of food and hot beverages and fun family activities ranging from building snowmen, shinny hockey games and indoor activities at the Vanier branch library located in the park.
The Vanier Rink Rats and the Vanier Snack Shack will also be helping out with the day's events.
Léger said it was the level of participation from everyone that is making the event come to life.
Residents are encouraged to come out and have fun. Any donations of hats and scarves for the snow people are appreciated.
