EMC news - Skating season is in full swing on the world's largest skating rink as portions of the Rideau Canal skateway are now open.

The first section of the Rideau Canal skateway was opened on Jan. 15, officially launching the 42nd skating season.

On Jan. 19, a 1.4-kilometre section of the skateway was opened, making a total of 3.6 kilometres of the skateway open to the public in time for the first full weekend.

The skateway opening is just in time for the NHL All-Star Weekend, which takes place from Jan. 26 to 29. A fundraising event organized by the Sens Foundation, Light up the Night for Kids and the Community, will take place on Jan. 25.

Skaters will be able to access the skateway at numerous entry points between the Corktown footbridge at Somerset Street and the Bank Street Bridge.

Residents can check the NCC website at www.canadascapital.gc.ca/skateway for skateway updates.
