Bruce Poulin runs for council in Rideau-Rockcliffe
Posted Jul 29, 2010 By James RubecEMC News - Former progressive conservative candidate Bruce Poulin is running to be the next councillor in Rideau-Rockcliffe ward. Mr. Poulin served in the military for 22 years and has spent the past 10 years as an entrepreneur and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
In the Legion Mr. Poulin has acted as service officer, where he serves the interested of retired injured veterans and RCMP personnel.
"Sometimes veterans aren't in the best condition to represent their cases, they are often trained to manage discomfort and they need to be guided to get the services they really need," said Mr. Poulin.
Mr. Poulin graduated first class with honours from the Royal Military College of Canada, and received a masters degree in international relations, with a focus on negotiations and mediation from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at John Hopkins University in Washington D.C.
Mr. Poulin has lived in Rideau-Rockcliffe for the past 25 years, where he has volunteered much of his time to the Optimist Club, the Moose Lodge, Action Vanier, Muséoparc Vanier and ensuring that girls can play minor hockey. Mr. Poulin is also a member of the Knights of Columbus, where his efforts earned him the Queen's Golden Jubilee medal in 2002.
In 2007, Mr. Poulin ran for provincial government with the Progressive Conservative party in Ottawa Vanier, and lost to incumbent Madeleine Meilleur.
The candidate said he believes representing the community is the right move to further his involvement with the area.
"I feel that council is a natural progression for me, he said. "This would be the best way for me to serve my community. I'm bilingual and I understand the issues that the neighbourhood has to address and its complicationsthat being languages, economic classes, and transportation issues."
For his campaign Mr. Poulin has begun canvassing the neighbourhood and organizing his volunteers. He said he feels he is aware of the issues and has the skill set to address them.
"I'm a single dad," he said. "I have one kid in university, another is a commissionaire and one more who has just graduated high school. I know what the costs of raising children are these days, whether that's the cost of hockey equipment or access fees to after school activities. It's hard these days."
Mr. Poulin said he believes he has not only been an active member of the community but that his voice has been heard.
"This is all a question of arguing on behalf of the residents of this ward and I'm ready to do that," said Mr. Poulin
