Sandy Hill's flood remediation plan wins award

EMC News - The basements and homeowners of Sandy Hill are already appreciative, and now the American Public Works Association (AWPA) is too.
The City of Ottawa, Doran Contractors Ltd., the primary consultant Stantex and the Sandy Hill Infrastructure Taskforce, a subcommittee of Action Sandy Hill will be presented with an award APWA for the Sandy Hill Flood Remediation Project on August 15 in Boston.
Sandy Hill is prone to flooding, as much of the neighbourhood sits lower than the Ottawa River. Compounding the issue, the sewer system that handles storm water also handles sewage from homes. During rain events in Sandy Hill large amounts of water and sewage would back up into peoples homes, causing damage ranging from minor clean ups to complete basement reconstruction.
“Four times in the past decade water flooded peoples basements. The sewer system couldn’t handle the flow of the water, and water would back up into people’s homes,” said Rideau-Vanien ward Coun. Georges Bédard.
The problem was costing homeowners thousands of dollars after every flood, and people were worried that soon they would lose their insurance coverage.
