A week to celebrate women
Posted Mar 5, 2010 By EMC NewsEMC Editorials - Beginning on Monday, March 8, people around the world will be celebrating the achievements of women.
International Women's Week is a time to celebrate the battle women have fought for equal rights, and the hurdles they have jumped to do great things.
Take a moment to think about the incredible women you know. Mothers, daughters, sisters, nieces, cousins, or friends, this is the time to celebrate.
Today, women enjoy fabulous freedoms to pursue education, careers, and make a difference in the world. Others choose to raise families, shaping the next generation into upstanding, hard working citizens.
It hasn't always been this easy. In our newsroom, we share stories told by our mothers and grandmothers about hardships, prejudice and mistreatment. Being a women was indeed a hardship in itself for many.
Thanks to many pioneering and hardworking women, the following generations have been able to surpass the expectations of many. They are able to run giant corporations, manage small businesses, hold political offices, pursue goals and dreams while managing families.
At this time of year, we often hear about the key figures in Canadian women's history, such as Nellie McLung, Mary Anne Shadd, Agnus McPhail, and Ottawa's beloved Charlotte Whitton.
The theme for this year's celebration focusses on the progress of women, and celebrates those pioneers who paved the way for others to succeed, women like Grace Annie Lockhart, the first to receive a post secondary degree, or Esther Marjorie Hill, the first female architect to enter the trade, and Eileen Vollick, the first women to receive a private pilot's license.
It's thanks to these women, who fought through adversity, doubt and sometimes, disapproval, who made the world what it is for today's women.
Whether or not you celebrate International Women's Day in March 8, or the entire week that follows, be sure to take some time to think about the contributions others have made. Without those hardworking women, today's world would be an entirely different place for all.
And be sure to thank a women in your life for everything she does. It's not been an easy road, but the path is now clear to strive for even greater things.
Never underestimate the power of a women.
